MIT Bengaluru professor debarred for calling a Muslim student ‘terrorist’; video goes viral

Karnataka: The professor has been debarred from taking classes till completion of the inquiry. The incident took place on November 26.

NEW DELHI: A professor at Bengaluru's Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) referred to a Muslim student as a 'terrorist' in classroom. The video of the incident went viral and a probe has been initiated by the university. The professor has been debarred from taking classes till completion of the inquiry. The incident took place on Friday, November 26.

“The incident happened three-four days ago and we came to know about it through a tweet last night. Appropriate action has been initiated with the setting up of an enquiry committee and the concerned faculty has been debarred from taking classes till the completion of the probe. The student has been counseled. We have a zero-tolerance policy on such kinds of incidents. We will take suitable action after the probe,” SP Kar, director of public relations, Manipal University told Careers360.

In a response to the viral video, MIT Bengaluru posted a response on Twitter saying, “The institute has already initiated an inquiry into the incident and the concerned staff has been debarred from taking classes till the inquiry is over. We would like everyone to know that the institute does not condone this kind of behavior and this isolated incident will be dealt with in accordance with the laid down policy.”

“The institute prides itself with one of the biggest diversity on campus and is committed to uphold our constitutional values of treating everyone alike irrespective of their caste, religion, region and gender etc,” it added.
