Mumbai MP urges education minister to take uniform decision on exams

NEW DELHI: The member of Parliament (MP) for South Mumbai Arvind Sawant, on Saturday, wrote to the education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ urging him to take a “uniform decision” on board exams. Sawant said that a decision by the central government would help ensure that no students face a “disadvantage career and opportunity wise” due to decisions taken by the respective state governments.

States have been postponing exams and cancelling physical classes amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases across the country.

“A unilateral decision by a state would lead to the students of that particular state being at a disadvantage career and opportunity wise. Your intervention would mean national consensus, instead of a unilateral decision from any particular state,” Sawant said.

The MP pointed out that the India has multiple central and international boards apart from state boards a decision by the centre will ensure “that there is no discrimination in terms of safety measures or that of opportunity”.

Sawant also said that conducting exams will be putting millions of students at high risk.

“The exams due in a few days will have millions of students and their families, their teachers, the non-teaching staff at high risk considering the virulence of the current pandemic.Many students and teachers are also coming from micro containment zones as constantly suggested by the Union Health Ministry, which makes logistics difficult,” Sawant said in his letter.

The MP also said that the students “come in an age group that is not being allowed to be vaccinated by the Union Health Ministry” which creates further risk.

Other politicians such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi had also expressed concerns about conducting the board exams during the pandemic.
