NBEMS' Abhijat Chandrakant Sheth appointed NMC chairman

The appointments committee of Cabinet has appointed Abhijat Chandrakant Sheth chairperson of the National Medical Commission (NMC) and MK Ramesh president of the Medical Assessment Rating Board (MARB). Sheth was previously appointed president of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS).

Ramesh is the former president of the Post-Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) and former vice-chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, Karnataka.

The appointment of the persons is for four years from the date of assumption of the post or till attaining the age of 70 years or until further orders, whichever is the earliest.

According to the Ethos official website, Sheth did his postgraduate in cardiothoracic surgery from Sheth KM School of Postgraduate Medicine and Research, Ahmedabad, and also worked as an academician at various medical colleges. He has taken his MD research degree from London University under the supervision of Brendan P Madden and an MBA (health executive) from Keele University, Manchester.

Later in 1998, he went to the United Kingdom for further training on cardiothoracic surgery, where he worked as a senior house officer and registrar at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle. He has published more than 20 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious journals.
