NEW DELHI: The central government informed the Supreme Court on Monday that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Masters of Dental Surgery (NEET-MDS) counselling 2020 will be held online within four weeks. The counselling will be done as per the existing reservation policies, the Bar and Bench reported.

The delay in counselling occurred due to the clarification sought from the top court regarding the Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservations in All India Quota (AIQ) seats provided by the state medical colleges under the AIQ scheme.

The ministry of health and family welfare replied that a petition of Saloni Kumari vs Director General of Health remains pending in the top court along with several other petitions filed in Madras High Court regarding OBC reservations which have led to the delay.

The Supreme Court had urged the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on July 12 to announce the date of NEET-MDS 2021 counselling within a week. Justice DY Chandrachud said: "Make a statement now. The Ministry of Health is just dilly-dallying. These are hands-on courses and these doctors will be in service of patients," as per the report.

The court said that it hopes that the central government is conscious of the consequences of the delay in NEET-MDS counselling being faced by the students.

A plea was filed earlier against the "unjust and infinite delay by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC)”. According to the plea filed at the apex court, the entrance exam was conducted on December 16, 2020, and the results were declared on December 31, 2020. Despite that, there is no update on the NEET-MDS counselling.

The counselling session of NEET MDS 2021 is conducted along with the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate, or NEET PG 2021, every year. Waiting for NEET PG 2021 to be conducted first will result in further delay. Therefore, the petitioners had also requested a separate counselling session in the plea seeking NEET MDS 2021 counselling dates.
