A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Hrishikesh Roy stated that the delay in counselling will lead to serious consequences for the dental candidates.
The petition which was filed by Advocates Tanvi Dubey and Charu Mathurin highlighted an “unjust and infinite delay” caused by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) in the commencement of the counselling for National Eligibility cum Entrance Test and Masters of Dental Surgery, or NEET-MDS 2021.
NEET MDS 2021 exam was conducted on December 16, 2020, and the results were declared on December 31, 2020. Taking this into consideration, the court has directed the authorities to announce the dates for the NEET MDS counselling 2021 in one week.
"We expect that an expeditious decision will be taken within the course of next week and the court will be informed when the Union Government proposes to hold counselling for students whose MDS NEET results were declared on 31 December 2020. We hope that the Union Government would be conscious of the serious consequences which will be faced by these students as a result of long delay in completing the counselling," the court said, as per the Live Law report.
The counselling session of NEET MDS 2021, every year, is conducted along with the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate, or NEET PG 2021. Waiting for NEET PG 2021 to be conducted first will cause more delay and eventually a wastage of an entire year of dental graduates. Therefore, the petitioners had also requested a separate counselling session in the plea seeking NEET MDS 2021 counselling dates
"You have to hold counselling immediately and complete counselling for MDS NEET students. These are qualified BDS Doctors, they are wasting a year of their lives! As it is they would be on the job, working somewhere in these Hospitals. Allow these doctors to qualify, to get their degrees, they will be in service of patients. Imagine what a loss to India by not allowing a whole batch of PG students to complete their education for 1 year." Justice Chandrachud added.
NEET MDS 2021 counselling will be conducted for admission to 50% AIQ, all seats in deemed/central universities, ESIC and AFMS institutes.
