NEW DELHI: Every year, over 2 lakh MBBS graduates appear in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test PG (NEET PG 2024) exam. The ministry of health and family welfare told the Lok Sabha earlier this year that postgraduate (PG) medical seats have increased by 127% in the last 10 years. As per the data shared by the government, the total number of NEET PG seats have increased from 31,185 before 2014 to 70,645 as of now.

The NEET PG exam date 2024 was changed thrice this year, and as per the latest update, the entrance exam will be held by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) on June 23.

The total number of medical colleges have also increased by 82% from 387 before 2014 to 706 as of February 2024. “The PG seats have also increased from 39,583 in 2018-19 to 64,059 in 2022-23,” the Union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.

“Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for establishment of new medical colleges by upgrading district or referral hospitals under which 157 new medical colleges have been approved, out of which 108 are already functional,” the minister informed.

Moreover, DNB qualification has been recognized for appointment of teaching faculty to take care of the shortage of faculty, it added.

NEET PG seats 2024

Maharashtra has the highest number of 3,576 PG medical seats in government medical colleges and Karnataka offers a maximum number of 4,593 PG seats in private medical colleges. The data shared by the government also includes 1,621 CPS and 14,190 DNB seats.
