NEW DELHI: Following the death of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) student Prakriti Lamsal, and subsequent notices of expulsion for Nepali students from the university hostel, the Nepali Embassy in India stepped in. Discussions between the embassy and KIIT registrar and representatives focused on student safety and continued education.
“Our Embassy in New Delhi has dispatched two officers to counsel Nepali students affected in Odisha. Additionally, arrangements have been made to ensure they have the option to either remain in their hostel or return home, based on their preference,” Prime Minister of Nepal, KP Sharma posted on X.
As per the official press release, the Embassy urged the institution to prioritise the safety of Nepali students, provide hostel accommodation, and ensure their classes continue without disruption. The Embassy also stressed the need for an independent and impartial investigation into the death of KIIT student Prakriti Lamsal.
In response, KIIT confirmed that arrangements had been made to accommodate students in the hostel and facilitate their academic activities. The institute further stated that the police launched an investigation immediately after the incident and apprehended the culprit.
“The KIIT administration has taken all-out efforts to restore normalcy in the campus and hostels to resume the academic activities. An appeal is made to all our Nepali students who have or plan to leave the campus to return and resume classes,” institute appeal students.
According to the official press release, the Embassy has been in continuous contact with the Indian government, the Odisha Chief Minister’s office, and other relevant authorities to ensure necessary support and coordination. Affected Nepali students and their parents have been urged to reach out to the Embassy for assistance.
“The institution has committed to addressing the issue with seriousness. The Embassy expresses its heartfelt condolences to the grieving family of late Prakriti Lamsal and prays for her soul to rest in peace,” the official press release said.
