NIRF University Ranking Analysis 2020: Amrita up by 4 ranks, UOH plunges by 2

NEW DELHI: With the release of the NIRF Ranking 2020 for universities across India recently, it was a matter of joy for some universities, while not so great day for others. Some universities saw themselves rising up a few spots, while some others witnessed a downfall too. Amidst this mixed result of gain and loss, Careers360 brings to you a comparative analysis of top 20 universities (both government and private) with their ranks this year in comparison to last year.

As per the official data released by NIRF 2020, there has been no change in the top three positions. The universities which had claimed the top three spots last year had again reclaimed the same ranks this year too. Indian Institute of Science, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Banaras Hindu University had secured the first, second and third positions respectively last year and this year too, the first three ranks have again been secured by the same universities as the previous year.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham ups its rank by 4 levels; first among private

However, leaping forward, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has recorded a jump of 4 spots, securing 4 th rank for itself among all the universities of India. In 2019, while the university had secured 8 th rank in the NIRF, this year, it has upped its ranking by 4 levels. Furthermore, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham has also emerged as the top private universities in India, beating the likes of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Birla Institute of Technology and Science and Vellore Institute of Technology.

Moving further, Jadavpur University, which had an All India Rank of 6 last year, has been able to secure a better position this year with rank 5. Following on the footsteps, NIRF 2020 has brought good news to Manipal Academy of Higher Education which has also been able to move one rank up. Manipal Academy of Higher Education grabbed 8 th rank while last year it had secured an All India Rank of 9 in the NIRF Ranking.

On the same lines, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Jamia Millia Islamia, University of Delhi, Bharathiar University, Homi Bhabha National Institute, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Vellore Institute of Technology and Siksha 'O' Anusandhan are the other universities in top 20 who have been able to secure a better ranking for themselves in comparison with last year’s ranking.

Major gainers in 2020

The universities that reflected a great deal of improvement in their annual NIRF ranking are Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Homi Bhabha National Institute, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore and Siksha 'O' Anusandhan, Bhubaneswar which climbed up 4, 3, 8, 3 and 4 ranks than last year. Though BITS Pilani has taken a great leap forward, moving up 8 ranks than last year, however, the university still remains out the top 10 universities in India. In NIRF 2020, BITS Pilani has to stay content at All India Rank 15, while in 2019, it was at 23.

However, out of the top 20 universities, some have lost a few ranks this year if compared to the year 2019. The list of such universities include the University of Hyderabad, University of Calcutta, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Anna University, Aligarh Muslim University, Institute of Chemical Technology and Andhra University.

However, despite losing a few ranks, the University of Hyderabad, University of Calcutta and Savitribai Phule Pune University have still secured a place for themselves in the top 10. While University of Hyderabad is at rank 6 this year, last year it had an All India Rank of 4. The University of Calcutta and Savitribai Phule Pune University too have seen a drop in their ranking this year with 7th and 9 th rank respectively in 2020 whereas, in 2019, their ranking was 5 and 10 respectively.

Further, Anna University registered 12 th rank as per NIRF 2020, while in 2019 ranking it had secured 7 th position for itself. This means the university has witnessed a drop of 5 levels this year. Aligarh Muslim University is yet another university which saw a fall of 6 levels this year as compared to last year’s ranking. This year, AMU stands at rank 17, while last year it had secured an All India Rank of 11 for itself. Institute of Chemical Technology and Andhra University have also lost a few ranks this year in the top 20 universities. While the Institute of Chemical Technology could secure rank 18 in comparison to 15 last year, Andhra University witnessed a drop of 3 ranks in 2020. Last year it could secure rank 16 th in the ANIRF Ranking, however, this year, it stood at 19 with a fall of 3 levels.
