NMC issues guidelines on MD in Emergency Medicine

NMC guidelines for competency-based PG training programme include learning outcomes, syllabus, assessment, recommended textbooks.

NEW DELHI: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued the guidelines for competency-based postgraduate training programme for MD in Emergency Medicine. The curriculum aims to enable learners to deliver high-quality emergency care and function effectively as educators, researchers, and administrators in emergency medicine.

The guidelines prepared by the Post Graduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) talk about subject-specific learning outcomes, competencies, syllabus, teaching and learning methods, assessment, and recommended textbooks, among other aspects.

According to NMC guidelines for MD Emergency Medicine, with the help of this course, students will be able to:

  • Care for physiologically stable patients presenting to acute care across the full range of complexity
  • Identify sick patients, be able to resuscitate and stabilise and know when it is appropriate to stop
  • Care for acutely injured patients across the full range of complexity
  • Care for children of all ages in the ED, at all stages of development and children with complex needs
  • Support the ED team by answering clinical questions and making safe decisions
  • Deliver key procedural skills
  • Deal with complex and challenging situations in the work place
  • Lead the ED shift
  • Support, supervise and educate
  • Participate in research and managing data appropriately
  • Participate in and promote activity to improve the quality and safety of patient care
  • Manage, administer and lead

Moreover, students would acquire competencies such as prehospital care, emergency wound management, pulmonary emergencies, gastrointestinal emergencies, environmental injuries, skin disorders, trauma management, abuse and assault management, among others.

MD in Emergency Medicine: Final exam, learning methods

A candidate will be required to perform a minimum of 24 procedures and participate in the teaching and training programme of undergraduate students, emergency medicine technicians and interns.

A PG student of emergency medicine will have to do least one of the following to make themselves eligible to appear in the final exam:

  • Poster presentation at a national/zonal/state conference of his or her speciality
  • Podium presentation at a national/zonal/state conference of his or her speciality;
  • Have one research paper published or accepted for publication in journal of his or her speciality as first author.

NMC guidelines further stated that the basic structured courses for cardiac life support, trauma life support, airway management, research methodology, suturing and splinting, will be completed by end of first year and mechanical ventilation, pediatric life support, neonatal life support, nerve block need to be completed by the student by the end of fifth semester.
