NMC reopens portal accepting application for new medical colleges, MBBS seat increase

NEW DELHI: The National Medical Commission has reopened the portal accepting applications for establishing new medical colleges and increasing MBBS seats in existing institutions in various states and union territories of the country. Interested stakeholders can apply on the official website, nmc.org.in.

The NMC has now allowed the colleges/institutions which could not apply for establishment of new medical colleges or increase in MBBS seats due to the condition of 100 MBBS Seats for 10 lakh population. The commission said such colleges will have to fulfil other conditions.

The stakeholders will have to submit the requisite application fee in favour of the secretary, National Medical Commission, Pocket 14, Sector 8, Dwarka, New Delhi, 110077. The fee should include 18% goods and services tax.

The commission in a previous circular had said the letter of permission will be granted to stakeholders under chapter 1 of ‘Guidelines for Undergraduate Courses under Establishment of New Medical Institutions, Starting of New Medical Courses, Increase of Seats for Existing Courses and Assessment and Rating Regulations, 2023’, which was notified by Undergraduate Medical Education Board on August 16.

The UGMEB and National Medical Commission (NMC) after re-examining the provisions of the ratio of 100 MBBS Seats for 10 lakh population in the states had decided to follow the new guidelines from academic year 2025-26.

As per the new guidelines, letter of permission (LoP) for starting of new medical colleges were to be issued only for annual intake capacity of 50/100/150 seats. The new colleges will have a maximum of 150 MBBS seats provided the institute follows the ratio of 100 MBBS seats for 10 lakh population in the state. The NMC had deferred these rule in a November 15 circular.

The NMC had also said that hospitals should have at least 220 beds and it should be within a maximum travel time of 30 minutes of the medical college.
