NEW DELHI : The Banaras Hindu University , on Wednesday, said that “no official decision has been taken” to appoint Nita Ambani as a visiting professor at the university. The university said that “no administrative order” was issued to appoint Ambani as a visiting professor.
Earlier reports stated that the Centre for Women’s Studies and Development at BHU has sent a proposal to make Nita Ambani, chairperson of Reliance Foundation, a visiting professor. Ambani is wife of Mukesh Ambani who leads India’s largest private company, Reliance Industries Ltd. Following reports, BHU students had protested against the supposed decision.
BHU, in a statement, said: “It is clarified that no official decision has been taken by the university administration nor any such administrative order to appoint Nita Ambani as a visiting professor in any faculty department center of the university or to give any responsibility of teaching has been issued.”
The university authorities also said that “no such proposal was submitted for consideration before the competent authority”.
“It is known that the appointment of a visiting professor at BHU requires the approval of the competent authority. In this case neither any such approval has been given nor any such proposal has been submitted before the competent authority for consideration,” the statement said.
The university also said that no official information in this regard was released by them prior to the clarification.
