Over 10,000 start-ups in the country are from Gujarat, says education minister: Report

NEW DELHI: Of 55,000 startups in the country, around 10,900 startups are from Gujarat, Gujarat education minister Jitu Vaghani said. He was inaugurating ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav - Incentivizing Innovations and Empowering Startups: Towards Building of Atmanirbhar Bharat’ at the Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat (KCG), as per a report from the Indian Express.

Vaghani announced the launch of a website for start-ups and an ‘Innovation Club’ at 483 colleges, universities in partnership with Gujarat Council of Science and Technology (GUJCOST), the report said.

Vaghani said that 150 startups have already made considerable progress, and “Gujarat provides handholding and required support to other states too.” If it is required, the government will increase the disbursements under the Gujarat government’s Student Startup and Innovation Policy (SSIP), Vaghani said, as per the report.

SSIP has selected 75 universities, institutes and incubators to conduct programmes under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative, the report said.

The selected organisations will host various events such as design thinking workshops, investments and pitching related events, start-up and innovation exhibition, industry start-up interaction, women start-up endeavours, IP related events and hackathons till September 26, as per the report.

A hackathon named ‘Smart Gujarat for New India Hackathon’ was conducted wherein 18 participating teams have been awarded. 10 institutes received Rs 86.45 lakh SSIP grants while 26 teams under the ‘Mind to Market initiative’ also received grants.

Moreover, Gujarat Venture Finance Limited (GVFL), Saurashtra Chambers of Commerce and Industry (SCCI), Gujarat Energy Development Agency (GEDA), Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad with i-Hub signed an agreement.
