Over two dozen Indian departments in QS subject-wise rankings

NEW DELHI: The latest QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings has revealed that 26 departments of eight Indian universities are in the top 100 in their respective subjects. This is an increase from 21 last year.

All 26 departments are of central government institutions – Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Indian Institute of Science (IISC) and Delhi University (DU).

IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Kanpur are in the top 100 universities in overall subject-wise ranking for engineering and technology.

In a first, IIT Bombay (rank 44) and IIT Delhi (rank 47) are in the top 50.

Subject-wise ranking

In the subject-wise rankings, Bombay has the most representation with nine subjects in the top 100s. In that, the departments of chemical engineering and mineral and mining engineering are in the top 50.

While IIT Delhi has five subjects in the top 100; IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IISc have three each. IIM Ahmedabad and Bangalore have one department – business studies – each in the top 100.

The departments of electrical and electronic engineering in IIT Delhi, mineral and mining engineering at IIT Kharagpur and development studies in DU feature in the top 50 rankings.

Last year, mineral and mining engineering from IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur, and developmental studies from DU were the only departments in the top 50.
