The University of Delhi has issued a statement condemning Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the campus without prior information to the authorities. The Congress leader visited Delhi University's North Campus today and interacted with students on National Education Policy (NEP), issues of representation, equality and academic justice.
The interactive session held at the office of Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) president witnessed enthusiastic participation of students from multiple colleges and departments, the PTI reported earlier today.
Students also reportedly raised several concerns, including caste-based discrimination, lack of representation of marginalized communities in faculty positions, and disproportionate academic weightage of skill enhancement courses (SECs).
“The role of students goes beyond classrooms - they must stand up for the rights of the oppressed and underrepresented,” the PTI quoted Rahul Gandhi.
Following the event, DU Proctor Rajni Abbi issued a video statement, in which she said: “Today Rahul Gandhi came to University of Delhi without any information to the authorities. He stayed in the DUSU Office for almost one hour. During this time, the DUSU was cordoned by security cover. Shri Rahul Gandhi has done this for the second time for coming to the University without any intimation and information to University of Delhi.”
In 2023, the provost of DU's PG men's hostel sent a notice to Rahul Gandhi, citing "unexpected entry" into the premises along with three vehicles violated "rule number 15.13 of the Handbook of Information and Rules of the Hostel". "No resident shall indulge in any activity in the Hostel premises other than academic and residents council activities," the rule read.
“There were some students inside the DUSU Secretary's room who were locked in her room and later were misbehaved by NSUI members. The DUSU Secretary was outside. She was not allowed to enter her office and was not let in by NSUI students,” the official statement read. The university said it will take strict action against students involved in the incident. Notably, DU proctor Rajni Abbi was former mayor of Delhi from BJP.
A massive protest was held by the ABVP, a right-wing student organisation affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), outside the DUSU office during Rahul Gandhi’s visit. In the purported video, students are heard questioning the leader about the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.
