Rajasthan FMG Stipend Protest: FIR against 35 interns; medical bodies seek dialogue

An FIR has reportedly been registered against Delhi-based Dr Jaswant Yadav and around 35 MBBS graduates protesting outside the Rajasthan Medical Education Society (RajMES) office in Jaipur over the non-payment of internship stipend. The case was registered at the Adarsh Nagar police station, according to a First India News post shared by the All FMGs Association (AFA).

The Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) interns are demanding a monthly stipend of Rs 21,700, along with arrears, citing directions on equal pay for equal clinical work in government hospitals. The FMG protest has been continuing since September 16, according to the AFA post.

The development has drawn support from medical bodies including AFA, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) and the All India Medical Students' Association (AIMSA), which have called for dialogue between the protesting doctors and the Rajasthan government.

FIR reportedly filed against FMG interns

According to the First India News update shared by AFA, a case was registered at Adarsh Nagar police station against doctor Jaswant Yadav and around 35 MBBS graduates who were protesting outside the RajMES office.

The First India said the protesters had been demonstrating since September 16 and had reached the fifth floor of the office on September 28, where they allegedly created a disturbance and obstructed government work. It said the case was registered under provisions relating to unlawful assembly and that Adarsh Nagar police were investigating.

FMGs demand stipend, arrears

The interns are demanding a stipend of Rs 21,700 per month, which they say should match the amount paid to Indian medical graduates for comparable internship duties.

The protesters have also sought payment of arrears for the period during which they worked without receiving a stipend. They have maintained that they are carrying out clinical duties in government hospitals while seeking implementation of the directions on stipend parity.

The AFA said in an X post that the doctors had been “peacefully presenting their concerns” before the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) and seeking a response from the Rajasthan government regarding their stipend.

The association said the doctors were working in government hospitals and fulfilling their duties without receiving a stipend.

“These doctors are not against the system they are simply asking for their rightful stipend and a fair opportunity to be heard,” AFA said in its post.

AFA appealed to the Rajasthan government and Jaipur Police to consider the circumstances of the protesting doctors and engage with them through dialogue.

AIMSA warns of nationwide strike

AIMSA, the Foreign Medical Students' Wing, said it “strongly opposes” the reported FIR against 35 intern doctors, including Dr Jaswant Singh Yadav.

According to AIMSA, the interns had been protesting for 13 days, while five doctors had been on hunger strike for five days. The association also said that the protesting doctors had not received a written assurance from the Rajasthan government or DME regarding their stipend.

AIMSA urged Rajasthan government representatives and Jaipur Police to intervene in the matter.

The association further said that if the FIR is not withdrawn and a written assurance is not provided within 24 hours, medical associations and the medical fraternity across India would be called upon to consider a nationwide strike in support of the protesting doctors.

This is a warning issued by AIMSA and does not mean that a nationwide strike has been announced.

FAIMA calls for dialogue

FAIMA also expressed support for the protesting FMG interns and said reports of police complaints against them were concerning.

“FAIMA urges the Rajasthan Government, DME Rajasthan & Jaipur Police to choose dialogue over confrontation,” the association said in its X post.

FAIMA called for the stipend concerns to be addressed and said doctors serving patients should receive their dues.

The AFA also appealed to the authorities to consider withdrawing or reviewing the reported complaints and resolve the issue peacefully.

Protest continues over stipend issue

The associations have maintained that the FMGs are seeking their stipend while continuing to perform their internship duties in government hospitals.

The latest developments have brought the stipend dispute into focus again, with the protesters seeking a written response from the DME and Rajasthan government. The reported FIR has meanwhile prompted medical associations to call for dialogue and a resolution to the stipend issue.
