RTMNU Nagpur University rolls back 20% fee hike, silent on 5% jump in hostel fee

RTMNU received many representations from different student bodies to cancel fee hike citing the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, heavy rain in the state.

NEW DELHI: The Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University has rolled back the 20% fee hike for engineering and pharmacy students for the ongoing academic year 2022-23. The decision to cancel the fee hike was taken after the university received many representations from students.

The notice dated September 8 stated that the university has decided to cancel the earlier circular on increase in fees. The university received representations from different student bodies to cancel it citing the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, heavy rain in the state.

The notice further said that the Nagpur University vice chancellor Subhash Chaudhari submitted the request to roll back fee hike to the council, “who finally declared that the earlier circular of increased fees stands cancelled and the university will go back to charging original fees”.

The university in its earlier notice dated August 6 announced to increase the fees for engineering and pharmacy by 20% and 10% fee hike for BA, BCom and BSc students. It also informed students that the Nagpur University fees for the academic year 2023-24 will be increased by 7%.

On August 23, the RTM Nagpur University had announced a 5% hostel fee hike. However, the latest notice regarding the suspension of fee hike does not mention anything about the hostel fees.

Students union also warned to stage protest after the RTMNU announced the fee hike. Students have been opposing the university's decision since the beginning of the year. They staged protest for cancellation of offline exams in April 2022 stating COVID-19 situation. Heavy rains in Maharashtra also forced Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University to cancel all its examinations scheduled in August.
