Sharda University suspends teacher after question in BA exam starts political controversy

Sharda University said that the committee will look into the possibility of bias in the questions asked from the 1st year BA political science students.

NEW DELHI: After the Sharda University’s BA Political Science question paper which asked the students to write similarities between Fascism, Nazism and Hindutva quickly sparked a controversy, the university constituted a committee to look into the matter. The university has also suspended the concerned teacher.

Sharda University took to Twitter to inform that it has constituted a committee comprising three senior faculty members to look into the matter in its entirety. The committee is expected to submit a report as early as possible, it said.

“It has come to the notice of the university that certain question asked during the mid-term examination, from the students of 1st year BA Political Science (Hons) have attracted a lot of attention on the social media and electronic platforms which may have potential for social disharmony,” the university said in a statement.

A question in the university’s BA Political Science paper read, “Do you find any similarities between Fascism/Nazism and Hindu right wing (Hindutva)? Elaborate with arguments”.

The committee will look into the possibility of bias in the questions asked from the BA political science students, pending this inquiry, the university has suspended the concerned faculty, it said.

It further expressed regrets and said, “The University fraternity is totally averse to any line of thought which distorts the great national identity and the inclusive culture inherent in our national ethos.”

“As an institution of higher learning, we are committed to the large mission of civilisation revival that celebrated the best of our religion, tradition, history and culture that have shaped not just the idea of India, but all the facets of human knowledge on the world stage,” Sharda University registrar said.
