NEW DELHI: The Sikkim education department has announced the closure of all private and government schools in four districts in the view of cloudburst early today causing mass destruction in the state. According to the order, the schools in the districts of Pakyong, Gangtok, Namchi and Mangan districts will remain closed till October 8.

Several sections of the National Highway 10 connecting West Bengal to Sikkim, have also been washed away and many roads are also blocked.

“In view of the unprecedented emergency situation created by flooding of Teesta River, all government schools and private schools located in Pakyong, Gangtok, Namchi and Mangan districts shall remain closed till 8th October, 2023,” reads the circular from the Sikkim education department.

As per the reports, five people in the state have lost their lives to the flash floods, while 43 including 23 Army personnel remain missing since the flood hit the hill state.

'Spoke to Sikkim CM Shri Prem Singh Tamang and took stock of the situation in the wake of the unfortunate natural calamity in parts of the state. Assured all possible support in addressing the challenge. I pray for the safety and well-being of all those affected,' PM Modi wrote on Twitter.

However, to the relief of the people of Sikkim, the Central Water Commission (cwc) reported that the water level at three stations along the Testa, Melli, Singtam, and Rohtak, is hovering close to but below the danger mark.
