Tamil Nadu to have state education policy once CM approves drafting panel, says minister: Report

NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu school education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi said that the state will have its own education policy once the state chief minister MK Stalin approves the list of members of the drafting committee and a draft gets prepared, the New Indian Express reported.

Poyyamozhi said this while replying to a question during an event at Indra Ganesan College of Engineering, the report said.

The minister responded to a question on the delay in renewal of recognition to aided schools, which had denied salaries to various teachers. He reportedly said there are around 12,000 such cases, mostly in south Tamil Nadu, and they would be resolved soon.

Earlier in October, Stalin announced that the State would not implement the Centre’s New National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and said that an expert committee would be set up to formulate an education policy for the State.

No to NEP 2020

Without going deep into the NEP, the Chief Minister said in a statement that “Tamil Nadu has already made it clear that it will not implement the NEP, 2020. An expert committee will be formed soon to evolve an education policy for the State.” The NEP, approved by the Union Cabinet on July 29, 2020, outlines the nation’s vision.

In the Tamil Nadu Government Budget 2021, the government has also announced schemes for establishing model schools, addressing learning loss in schools, and a new Tamil Nadu Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Corporation along with the new state education policy.

Defending his government’s initiative of Illam Thedi Kalvi (Education at Doorstep) which he launched from Villupuram district, the Chief Minister said, “This novel initiative to bridge the learning gap that got deepened due to the closure of schools (owing to pandemic), will help develop and strengthen education further.”
