Tamil Nadu prepares for June 2 school reopening; cleanliness, enrolment, breakfast scheme in focus

The new academic session 2025-26 for Tamil Nadu schools is set to commence on June 2. Ahead of the Tamil Nadu school reopening, the Department of School Education and Elementary Education has instructed schools to make all necessary arrangements and take appropriate measures for academic and non-academic activities.

The state has directed the schools to ensure that all classrooms, principal's office, laboratories, toilets and other rooms in the school are thoroughly cleaned. It asked the schools to properly dispose of outdated laboratory equipment. It also urged the schools to clean the rainwater drainage path and ensure that the structure is repaired and ready for use.

The school department, in its guidelines, said: “All drinking water tanks and overhead water tanks for student use should be thoroughly cleaned internally with disinfectant and ensure that clean and safe drinking water is available to students.”

According to the government order issued in March, schools have to ensure that all children of school-going age are enrolled in schools in the areas where the school is located. The state government has also announced to award certificates of appreciation to government schools that enroll at least 50 more students than the previous year.

Textbooks, notebooks and details on welfare schemes will be provided to students studying in government, government aided higher and upper level schools, and partially aided schools. Further, all headmasters have been instructed to provide breakfast to students of Classes 1 to 5 at the specified time under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme.

Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin who attended the NITI Aayog meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the Centre to disburse Rs 2,200 crore funds under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) scheme due to the state. The funds have been withheld for the state as it denied implementing the PM Shri scheme.
