Tamil Nadu schools closed in several districts amid heavy rainfall; red alert issued

NEW DELHI: In light of the heavy rainfall forecast, schools in Chennai and the districts of Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Tiruvarur have been shut today, November 27, 2024. A red alert warning has been issued for Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur districts, and Karaikal today. As a precaution, schools and colleges in these areas will remain closed.

In particular, schools and colleges are closed in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Tiruvallur. For Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram, only schools will be closed. Additionally, holidays have been declared for Tiruchi, Pudukottai, and Ariyalur.

Specifically, both schools and colleges are closed in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Tiruvallur. In Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram, only schools are closed for the day. Additionally, holidays have been declared in Tiruchi, Pudukottai, and Ariyalur.

Red alert in Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai.

The IMD has issued specific alerts for parts of Tamil Nadu. On Wednesday, a red alert has been declared for extremely heavy rainfall in Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai.

Schools and colleges in other regions, including Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Tiruvarur, will remain closed due to the anticipated severe weather, which has been affecting these districts since Tuesday.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in districts such as Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengelpet, and Cuddalore. In response, authorities have declared holidays for schools in areas like Chennai, Chengelpet, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai, PTI reported.

Exams postponed in colleges

In addition to school closures, colleges have also postponed their scheduled exams. Bharathidasan University in Tiruchirappalli issued a notice announcing the postponement of the exam originally set for November 27. The notice states that the exam has been deferred due to the heavy rainfall forecast. The revised date for the exam will be announced at a later time, according to the circular.

Chennai is under a yellow alert for heavy rain from Wednesday to Friday. Neighbouring districts like Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpet are on yellow and orange alerts between Wednesday and Saturday.
