Take strict action against medical colleges violating anti-ragging guidelines: UDF to NMC

NEW DELHI: Following the recent cases of ragging in medical colleges, the UDF (United Doctors Front) has demanded strict action. The doctors’ body praised the guidelines issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC) on ragging in medical institutions. Lakshya Mittal, the national president of UDF, stated that strict action should be taken against medical colleges that fail to follow these guidelines.

The association noted several incidents of ragging in medical colleges across the country have come to light recently. In one such case, a student died during ragging at GMERS Medical College in Dharpur, Gujarat. In light of such incidents, the UDF has demanded the implementation of strict anti-ragging measures. It has also called for stringent action against colleges that fail to comply with the rules.

According to a letter issued by the NMC in this regard, several complaints of ragging involving medical undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) students have been received, including cases that led to suicides. Despite clear anti-ragging rules, there have been lapses in compliance, UDF claimed. The lack of adequate monitoring mechanisms, the absence of anti-ragging squads, failure to submit annual anti-ragging reports, and insufficient steps to effectively eliminate ragging have contributed to the rise of ragging, it stated.

In the letter to NMC, the UDF has demanded the formation of anti-ragging squads and the implementation of the 2021 anti-ragging regulations, urging strict monitoring of such activities. The doctors’ group has also requested that colleges submit annual anti-ragging reports on time. Mittal emphasized that strict action should be taken against cases where the Medical Colleges and Institutions (Prevention and Prohibition of Ragging) Regulations, 2021 are not being followed.
