UGC defers PhD as mandatory qualification for recruitment of assistant professors till 2023
The recruitment of assistant professors in various departments of universities will continue on the basis of UGC NET score till 2023.
NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has extended the date of applicability of PhD as the mandatory qualification for hiring assistant professors in the different departments of universities to July 2023, the UGC announced on social media.
“UGC extends the date of applicability of PhD as mandatory qualification for direct recruitment of assistant professors in departments of universities from July 2021 to July 2023 as per UGC minimum qualifications for appointment of teachers and other academic staff in universities and colleges and measures of standards in higher education, amendment regulation, 2021,” UGC said in an official statement.
The Central government amended the UGC regulations making PhD as mandatory qualification for appointment of assistant professors. The regulation making PhD minimum eligibility for hiring assistant professors was originally to come under effect from 2021 which has been deferred till 2023 due to the pandemic situation.
Rajib Ray, President, DUTA said: “The UGC has deferred the mandatory clause of PhD for appointment as Assistant Professors in universities for two years till June 2023. This is a big relief for adhoc teachers working in university departments. A big victory for DUTA as timely intervention and pursuance forced the UGC to concede to this demand.”
“The DUTA first highlighted this issue with the UGC on 14 August and then met UGC officials on 15 September. The University must immediately issue a corrigendum to the advertisement to enable all to apply for the posts advertised in various depts,” Ray added.
Recently, NTA postponed the UGC NET 2021 exam which was scheduled to be held from October 17 to October 25 as it was clashing with other major exams. NTA is expected to announce the new exam dates soon.
Earlier the UGC NET 2021 exam was supposed to be held from October 6-11 which was rescheduled to October 6-8 and further rescheduled to October 17-25.
