UGC flags 20 universities in 8 states as fake; most in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced the state-wise list of fake universities as of September 2023. The statutory body has directed the state government’s Department of Higher Education and principal secretaries to take “appropriate action” against the fake institutions in the respective state.
Out of the 20 universities flagged as non-recognised, Delhi has the highest number of 8 fake universities, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 4. A total of 8 states have fake universities functioning against the University Grants Commission Act, 1956. There are two fake universities each in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.
According to UGC Act 1956, “The right of conferring or granting degrees shall be exercised only by a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act or an institution deemed to be a University under section 3 or an institution specially empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer or grant degrees.
