UGC launches two new open online courses on arctic, polar studies

Interested candidates can apply for the two MOOCs for the July 2024 semester at swayam.gov.in.

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched two Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on arctic, polar studies on the SWAYAM portal. The courses are available for registration on the SWAYAM platform for the July 2024 semester at swayam.gov.in. The courses will commence from July 18, 2024. The duration of each course is 15 weeks, and each MOOC carries four credits. These courses can be used for both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

“Many are curious about the rapidly changing Arctic region and its impact on the world, including India. The Arctic is influenced by a delicate climate system, a web of interdisciplinary sciences, and international law,” said UGC in an official statement.

“This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, aiming to deliver the best online courses to boost scientific awareness in universities and colleges and to advance knowledge in polar research and climate science. The UGC Subject Matter Expert Committee has selected courses matching with the six pillars of the Arctic Policy of India,” the commission added.

“Changing weather patterns have global consequences, affecting everything from monsoon cycles to rising sea levels. Considering the critical role of the Arctic in global conversations and our country, courses on arctic are a value addition for our youth. These courses are credit-eligible, and universities have the flexibility to integrate them according to their preferred design of curriculum,” said UGC chief Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar.
