NEW DELHI: University Grants Commission (UGC) has suspended admissions to PhD courses at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) over certain anomalies. The UGC said it will form a committee to examine the issues regarding BHU PhD admissions 2025.

According to UGC, all universities must adhere to a minimum standard procedure to admit students to PhD courses and award degrees as stipulated in the UGC regulations 2022. To ensure compliance with these regulations, the UGC-established committee will thoroughly examine BHU's practices.

UGC has directed BHU to suspend all further actions regarding PhD admission for the admission year 2024-25 until a report has been submitted by the committee and a decision has been reached.

“As you are aware, Universities are required to admit students in PhD programmes and award Ph.D. degree as per University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022. Hence, in order to examine the issues pertaining to PhD admission at BHU and ensure compliance of UGC Regulations, it has been decided to constitute a Committee,” the UGC notice reads.
