WARDHA: The 17-year-old daughter of a farmer allegedly committed suicide in Maharashtra's Wardha district over her family's inability to enrol her in Class 12 due to lack of money to pay fees, a police official said on Monday. He identified the deceased as Sonsavli village resident Sonia Uikey.

"As per the father's complaint, based on which an FIR has been registered, the girl had completed Class 11 and was planning to enrol in Class 12. However, due to financial constraints, her parents asked her to wait for some time for admission. After the money could not be raised, she hanged herself in their house on July 4," said Pulgaon Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rahul Chavan.

Local NCP (SP) MP Amar Kale, who visited the house of the deceased and spoke to the family, confirmed the developments and told reporters it was very unfortunate incident. "The government should look into why such a situation is arising in the state. Till now, we used to see farmers committing suicides, but now even school students are ending their lives. It is very shameful for a progressive state like Maharashtra," Kale said.
