NEW DELHI, JANUARY 7: With nearly 90 days left for the Model Code of Conduct for the General Elections 2019 coming into effect, Union Cabinet has approved 10% reservation for economically weaker upper castes.
Reportedly, the Union Cabinet has approved 10% reservation for economically backward upper castes in jobs and education. The Government is likely to move a constitutional amendment bill in the Parliament tomorrow to push for 10% extra reservation among general categories.
As per reports, general category candidates with a family income of less than Rs 8 lakhs per annum and owning less than 5 acres of land would be eligible for the proposed quota. The quota would be over and above the existing 50% reservation cap imposed by the Supreme Court.
