University of Design, Innovation and Technology to come up in Gurugram

The Haryana government has proposed to set up a University of Design, Innovation and Technology in Gurugram, following the amendment to the Haryana Private Universities Act, 2006. The Haryana Private Universities (Amendment) Bill 2025 gives the government power to take over the regulation, administration, or dissolve private universities in cases involving alleged anti-national activities.

According to the Haryana State Higher Education Council (HSHEC), there are a total of 23 private universities in the state. Haryana has some of the best-known private universities inlcduing World University of Design (WUD), Amity University, Ashoka University, and others.

WUD was the first university in India solely dedicated to creative education, offering a comprehensive structure for the design disciplines. WUD offers one of the widest ranges of undergraduate programmes in the creative domain, combining design, technology, visual arts, performing arts, and others.

Haryana Private Universities (Amendment) Bill 2025

The new bill introduces a legal framework for the Haryana government to intervene in cases of administrative failures, academic misconduct, irregularities, or national security-related violations.

The amendment in the Haryana Private Universities (Amendment) Bill 2025 also gives the government control over new courses and admissions. Now, the private universities are required to have permission from the state government before admitting students to their new courses. Earlier, the approvals were sometimes given if the government did not respond within the stipulated time. However, this provision has also been removed.

The decision came after the recent Al Falah University case, where the private university in Haryana was alleged to have been involved in planning the Delhi Red Fort blast in November.

The Crime Branch had filed FIRs against the private university for forgery and cheating after the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) flagged irregularities in its accreditation claims.
