University of Southampton's India campus gets 300 applications; president meets education minister

NEW DELHI: The union minister of education Dharmendra Pradhan met the president and vice-chancellor of the University of Southhampton Mark E Smith, along with Alison Barrett MBE, the country director of the British Council in India. The UoS president Mark E Smith, briefed about the progress of the University of Southampton campus in Delhi NCR. As one of the top 100 global universities, it is the first foreign university to open a campus in India.

This is a significant step towards promoting study in India and also aligning with the vision of the NEP 2020 policy.

The vice president of the University of Southampton, Andrew Atherton told Careers360 that the university had received 300 applications till now. He said the university has made offers to 200 candidates and a large number of applications were received for the undergraduate programme.

"The university is offering students six programmes, including four undergraduate programmes and two postgraduate programmes." He further adds that applications were received from Indiam students including applications from Gulf countries and a large number of OCI passport holders.

University officials highlight increasing number of international applications

During a roundtable discussion, officials of the Universities UK International (UKKi), a consortium of over 140 UK universities highlighted the ongoing January admission cycle and the increasing number of international students.

Additionally, Alison Barret the director of the British Council added that there are three to four UK universities which are in talks with India to establish their campus here. However, she did not reveal any names.
