UP government doubles MBBS, BDS rotating internship allowance to Rs 25,000

The Uttar Pradesh government has increased the rotating internship allowance for MBBS and BDS students to Rs 25,000 per month from Rs 12,000. The increase in internship stipend will benefit around 3,928 students from government medical colleges, institutions, and medical universities.

The rotating internships are mandatory for MBBS, and BDS students after graduating from medical colleges. The decision to increase the allowance was approved at the Cabinet meeting, led by chief minister Yogi Adityanath.

According to a PTI report, in 2021, the UP government had increased the stipend from Rs 7,500 to Rs 12,000. Now, the MBBS and BDS rotating internship stipend has been increased to Rs 25,000 per month.

The government’s move is a relief for MBBS and BDS interns undergoing training at government medical colleges and it will also encourage them, the report read.

The MBBS and BDS rotating internship is mandatory work for medical graduates after passing out from the medical college.

During the internship, students work with doctors in treating patients at government medical institutions and also play a part of the emergency services, wards, OPDs and night duties, it added.

In July 2026, the National Dental Commission (NDC) announced a major change for the BDS students by scrapping the requirement of provisional registration for the compulsory rotary internship.

The decision by the NDC follows a trail of complaints from medical students facing hindrance in securing permanent registration in absence of provisional registration which was mandatory before the commencement of the rotary internship.
