UP Police recruitment board denounces misleading social media claims regarding caste-based selection

NEW DELHI: The Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) has issued a clarification regarding misleading comments circulating on social media about candidates’ castes based on their surnames or titles. The board has urged the public not to spread unverified information, stating that selection is strictly based on caste certificates verified by competent authorities.

In an official statement, UPPRPB emphasised that no candidate is declared successful or unsuccessful based on their surname or title. “Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board clarifies in this regard that no candidate is declared successful/unsuccessful on the basis of surname or title,” the official statement said.

The verification process involves scrutiny by a document verification (DV) board, which includes officers at the level of sub-divisional magistrate and deputy superintendent of police. The original caste certificates are examined, and candidates are declared successful only after complete verification.

Misidentification of candidates

The board cited two specific cases where incorrect assumptions were made. According to their verified caste certificates, candidate Pankaj Pandey belongs to the Gosai caste, and Shivani Upadhyay belongs to the Jogi caste—both of which fall under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category.

Furthermore, before issuing appointment letters, the selected candidates undergo a second round of verification conducted by the superintendent of police of the respective appointment district. “Before issuing the appointment letter, the selected candidates are re-verified by the Superintendent of Police of the appointment district,” the statement further said.

Report authentic caste information to UPPRPB

UPPRPB has urged candidates who have credible and authenticated information about any candidate’s caste to report it to the board via email at sampark@uppbpb.gov.in. The UPPRPB stated that it will ensure proper investigation in this regard and take necessary action.

The board has also urged the public to avoid posting or sharing misleading and unverified comments, stating that spreading misinformation regarding the recruitment process is a legal offense.
