113 new nursing colleges receive Rs 467 crore under CSS scheme; Rajasthan gets highest allocation

Himachal Pradesh, which has three nursing colleges in Chamba, Hamirpur, and Sirmaur, received the highest allocation of Rs 9 crore each between 2023-24 and 2025-26.
The Union government has approved 113 nursing colleges sanctioned under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) in the last two years, the ministry of health and family welfare informed the Lok Sabha. The Centre has released Rs 467 crore for 113 approved nursing colleges during the last three years.
The scheme was announced in the Union Budget 2023-24 for establishing 157 nursing colleges across the country in co-location with medical colleges. According to the ministry, proposals from states and union territories for 113 colleges have been received and approved so far.
The data shared by the ministry reveals that funds have been released for these new nursing colleges in the year 2023-24 to 2025-26, with allocations ranging from Rs 2 crore to Rs 9 crore per college.

Govt funds for new nursing colleges
The government data showed that Himachal Pradesh, which has three nursing colleges in Chamba, Hamirpur, and Nahan (Sirmaur), received the highest allocation of Rs 9 crore each between 2023-24 and 2025-26.
A nursing college in West Garo Hills, Tura, Meghalaya was allotted Rs 6.50 crore – the second highest – however, the fund was released only once in 2023-24.
Sikkim nursing college located in Gangtok also received Rs 6.50 crore, but in 2023-24 and 2025-26. This was followed by Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Nagaland, which got Rs 6 crore per college.
While 15 nursing colleges in UP received Rs 6 crore in the last two years, another four colleges in the state were allocated Rs 6 crore in 2023 and 2025. Additionally, the report also shows that eight nursing colleges – Fatehpur, Chandauli, Bulandshahar, Gonda, Pilibhit, Auraiya, Kanpur Dehat, and Deoria – were allocated Rs 2 crore only in a single year, 2023-24.
On the other hand, Rajasthan which is home to 23 new nursing colleges received Rs 6 crore per college in the last two years. Only three out of the total have been sanctioned funds for the year 2025-26.
Among other states, Odisha and Gujarat were provided Rs 4 crore per college in the 2023 launch year.

The Union government has released Rs 467 crore for 113 approved nursing colleges during the last three years. However, some colleges were allocated funds only once while some received grants over two financial years. Overall, Rajasthan was allocated the highest of Rs 138 crore.
