277 fake engineering colleges functioning without AICTE approval, Delhi leads with 66

NEW DELHI, AUGUST 2: As many as 277 engineering colleges across the country are functioning without the approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The maximum number of ‘fake colleges’ are functioning in Delhi. Close to 25 percent of these 277 colleges, a whopping 66 are functioning in Delhi alone closely followed by 35 in Telangana and 27 in West Bengal.

As per the latest data shared by Dr Satya Pal Singh, Minister of State for Human Resource Development, 277 fake engineering colleges are functioning without approval from the apex technical education regulatory body, the AICTE.

The Minister said, “the Institutions conducting unapproved courses are directed from time to time
through Public Notices and individual letters to either seek AICTE approval or to close them down.”

The AICTE has also notified regulations mandating the technical institutions to obtain the prior approval for running courses in Engineering and Technology.

The other states with a large number of fake colleges are Karnataka (23), Uttar Pradesh (22), Haryana (18), Bihar (17), Maharashtra (16) and Tamil Nadu (11).
