Amit Shah inaugurates new campus, research centre of IIT Jammu

IIT Jammu's phase 1C is estimated to be developed with a total cost of over Rs 700.19 crore. Phase 1A and 1B of IIT Jammu has been developed with a total cost of Rs 210crore.

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology, Jammu’s multi-disciplinary research centre, and a new campus were inaugurated by home minister Amit Shah today. The project built at the cost of Rs 210 crore include phase 1A and 1B of the permanent campus of IIT Jammu. The home minister also laid the foundation for the construction of the last phase 1C of the permanent campus. The last phase is estimated to be developed with a total cost of Rs 700.19 crore. The new campus will have the facilities like hostel, gymnasium, indoor games, along with higher education for the students.

“Hon. HM and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah today dedicated the Phase 1A & 1B of the permanent campus of IIT Jammu and Saptarshi: a multidisciplinary research centre in the august presence of Shri Manoj Sinha and Shri Jitendra Singh," tweeted the education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The IIT Jammu is also starting a joint degree program with Indian Institute of Management, Jammu and tunnel engineering for infrastructure development in the Himalayas. “IIT Jammu is starting pioneering courses, including joint degree programs with IIM Jammu, Tunnel Engineering for indigenous infra development in the Himalayas, encouraging solution-centric research for the benefit of society and is aiming to become a unicorn of research excellence,” added Pradhan.

“ The education of Kashmiri youth has been the top priority of prime minister Narendra Modi, and the new campus of IIT Jammu embodies the determination of the Modi government to develop education in the state," Shah who inaugurated the projects tweeted.

The education minister called today's developments at IIT as a step forward in realising Modi’s vision of a prosperous Jammu and Kashmir. "The institute of national importance will transform the higher education landscape and usher in a new era of development in J&K—the crown of India. I am happy to share that IIT Jammu is committed to build a humanistic, futuristic and inter-disciplinary environment in line with the NEP, “ added the education minister. The IIT Jammu is also developing online courses for credit transfer as part of outreach for students of Jammu and Kashmir under the National Education Policy, 2020.

The minister said the Modi government is working to establish Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh as a hub of higher education in north India. The government believes that the permanent campus inaugurated today will be a model in preserving the regional biodiversity and promoting scalable solutions for the Jammu Kashmir region.
