The university’s October 9 notification outlines the election schedule, with polling set for November 5

Following a twenty-day student protest demanding elections and the removal of the university’s proctor, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) will hold its 2026- 27 students’ union elections on November 5, 2026.
According to a notification issued by the AMU registrar on October 9, the announcement came after student representatives and Vice-Chancellor (VC) Naima Khatoon agreed on the students’ demands at a meeting late on October 8.
Alongside releasing the election schedule, the university administration has also replaced proctor Mohammad Naveed Khan with Mohammad Nafees Ahmed Ansari, professor of the Department of Political Science.
According to an office memorandum issued by the registrar on October 9, Ansari’s appointment will start with immediate effect. He will serve as proctor for two years or until further orders, whichever comes first, while continuing to teach in the Political Science department.
As announced by Javed Talib, Chief Election Officer, the election process will begin on October 26, when the voter lists will be put up in each faculty at 10 am. The social media post reads, “The unity and continued demands of students have kept the issue of student representation at the centre of campus discussions. Now, all eyes are on the election process.”

The protest had continued for twenty days, with students demanding student union elections and the removal of the proctor. The announcement of the election schedule and the appointment of a new proctor address the two key demands raised by the protesters.
The election will allow students to elect their representatives and raise campus-related concerns through the students’ union. This announcement has brought AMU closer to holding student union elections after a long period of uncertainty about the schedule.
However, the university’s announcement does not confirm that the protest has formally ended. The election process will now happen according to the latest announced schedule, with nominations, campaigning, and voting planned throughout early November.
