AMU Court has recommended professor former dean Uruj Rabbani and psychology professor Naima Khatoon besides Mustafa.

NEW DELHI: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Court has recommended the names of professor Muzaffar Uruj Rabbani, CNLU vice-chancellor Faizan Mustafa, and professor Naima Khatoon for the post of vice-chancellor of the university.
The court which is the highest governing body of AMU held a special meeting today and recommended the panel of the three names to president Droupadi Murmu. The president will appoint the AMU VC from the three names in her capacity as the university chancellor.
While professor Rabbani is former dean of the university’s faculty of medicine, professor Mustafa is a professor at the law department besides being the VC of Chanakya National Law University, Patna. Professor Khatoon is the professor of psychology and principal of women’s college at AMU. Notably, she is also the wife of the acting VC, professor Mohammad Gulrez, of the university.
During the voting, professor Rabbani secured 61 votes, professor Mustafa got 53 and professor Khatoon 50. Professor Furqan Qamar and Professor Qayyum Husain secured 45 and 43 votes, respectively. Professor Qamar and Professor Husain figured in the panel of five names that were drawn by the Executive Council of the University at its meeting held on October 30.
The meeting of the AMU court was presided over by the officiating VC and 84 members attended it. Naseem Ahmad, former AMU VC, was the Chief Election Officer to conduct the election.
According to university officials, the AMU Court has 193 seats of which 78 are vacant as elections for these posts have not been held in several years, a PTI report said.
