NEW DELHI: Expressing delight over the Supreme Court verdict on Aligarh Muslim University’s minority status, the AMU Teachers' Association (AMUTA) said that the judgment is a momentous affirmation of AMU’s unique identity and its foundational purpose of serving educational needs of the Muslim community, while being inclusive of all sections of society. AMUTA believes that the decision not only validates the university’s distinctive character but also strengthens its commitment to uphold the values on which it was established.

A seven-judge bench of the apex court delivered four separate judgements on the AMU minority status case and the final verdict was announced by a 4:3 majority.

The teachers’ body expressed profound gratitude to the lawyers, alumni, and numerous supporters who have relentlessly advocated for this cause. Their dedication, expert guidance, and unwavering support have played a pivotal role in securing this positive outcome, which AMUTA views as a fundamental principle of the institution.

Rejoicing in the key milestone, the teachers’ group reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the legacy of AMU. The association feels this is a pivotal moment for the university, and they will soon release a comprehensive statement after consulting with all stakeholders. This approach, AMUTA believes, will ensure that their response reflects a balanced and forward-looking perspective for the continued progress of the university.

The AMU teachers are also hopeful for the swift resolution of the minority character case, as directed by the norms set forth by the top court’s Constitutional bench. The association expressed full confidence in the Indian Judiciary and the Constitution, which it believes not only recognizes the plurality of the nation but also celebrates its diverse traditions, contributing to India’s position as a vibrant, competitive, and globally respected leader in education.
