Rise in harassment against J-K students in AMU; ensure 'complete safety': Student body

NEW DELHI: The Jammu and Kashmir students association has requested Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath to initiate criminal proceedings against those found guilty harassing Kashmir students in Aligarh Muslim University. At least three Kashmiri students were severely injured in over a month, the students group said.

The JK students group alleged that the Kashmir students were repeatedly harassed in AMU and that they were receiving frantic calls from scholars about the harassment. The series of tweets comes after another thrashing incident of a Kashmir PhD scholar reported today on AMU campus.

It said that the home ministry had issued an advisory in the past to take "strict action" against those responsible for such incidents. “However, in spite of all the advisories and directions, the harassment continues,” the students said.

“The goonda culture is an irrational and insane practice to induce fear in the society. AMU failed to ensure the safety and security of Kashmiri students in the AMU campus, despite repeated communications and calls,” J-K students association said.

They also said that the AMU vice chancellor Tariq Mansoor “must ensure safety to each and every student and should restore academic culture back to its fine stage”.

Tagging UP CM Yogi Adityanath, the students said, “The UP government needs to initiate criminal proceedings against people found guilty of harassing Kashmiri students in Aligarh Muslim University.”

They also requested Union Home Minister Amit Shah to constitute a team to ascertain the welfare of Kashmiri students and assure them of complete safety.

They further urged Shah to sensitize the nodal officers already appointed earlier for addressing such complaints from students of Jammu and Kashmir, so that such incidents do not recur in the future and the educational interests of J-K students are not hampered.
