NEW DELHI: The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to launch English medium in all degree colleges from this academic year, as per a Times of India report.

The officials said that the introduction of English medium in colleges will improve the career anticipation of students, as per the report.

Around 2.62 lakh students have taken admission in degree colleges in Andhra Pradesh this year of which 65,989 students were given admission into Telugu medium.

Therefore, 75% of the students had already opted for English medium even before the government decided to make it mandatory in the academic year 2021-22, the report said.

The Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education is working on introducing bilingual textbooks in the curriculum in order to roll out the decision of the government. It will introduce a unique characteristic of curated lessons in both English and Telugu medium in the same textbooks for the students, the report said.

According to the report, the textbooks will contain one page of English lesson and the next page will have lessons in Telugu making it hassle-free for the students to transit from Telugu to English.

Further the report said that the state officials are introducing special training programmes for the degree college students to improve their English speaking and writing skills.

The officials observed that according to a study of Cambridge University in 2016, 90% of the employers who look to recruit in India believe English skills to be relevant for their companies, as per the report.

Earlier, the government had also decided to introduce English medium schools across Andhra Pradesh but the decision was challenged in the high court, the report added.
