BHU ‘condemns’ protests against Roza Iftar, says VCs attending event for decades

Banaras Hindu University organised Roza Iftar at Women's College on April 27, VC Sudhir Jain participated. Students protested against it.

NEW DELHI: The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) condemned students’ protest against a Roza Iftar organized at Women’s College and participation of the vice-chancellor Professor Sudhir Jain in the event on April 27, 2022. “Many times in the past, various Vice Chancellors have had iftar sitting with the students in this program. The attempt to spoil the academic and harmonious environment of the University in this regard is condemnable,” said BHU in a tweet. Some BHU students staged a protest against the vice-chancellor’s participation in the Iftar party and burnt his effigy on Wednesday evening as per various media reports.

The University took to its Twitter to share some old pictures of Iftar event celebrated in the university in the past years and said that vice-chancellors have been attending the event for decades.

“Photos of the Vice Chancellors attending the Roza Iftar held earlier. The organization of fasting iftar was started in the university decades ago. Photos: 2010, 2013 and 2014, when the then Vice-Chancellors attended the Iftar,” BHU tweeted.

“Banaras Hindu University, the capital of Sarvavidya established by Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, is an inclusive institution. BHU has a global reputation for the quality of education and research and its integrity. Students from all over the world come here and earn their education fearlessly,” said the university.

BHU has been organizing Roza Iftar for many years and the Vice Chancellor as the head of the BHU family, whenever available in the campus, participates in this program and encourages the students, it said.

Roza Iftar was organized at Women's College located at BHU on April 27, in which Vice Chancellor Professor Sudhir Kumar Jain also participated. Along with the Vice Chancellor, the daily teachers, teachers and students of the Women's College broke their fast and had Iftar, according to the BHU tweet.

On this occasion, the Vice Chancellor interacted with the students and spoke openly to them. He also asked the students what kind of problems they face. The girl students also shared their views and made them aware of their needs, the tweets added.

Jain said that he and his administration have a special focus on the development of the women's college and increasing the facilities for the girl students and many positive efforts have been made in this direction. The girls were also very excited to find the Vice Chancellor in their midst and they also clicked a selfie with the Vice Chancellor, the tweets further said.
