BHU IMS conducts 1st allogeneic stem cell transplant successfully

NEW DELHI: Banaras Hindu University’s Institute of Medical Sciences (BHU IMS) under its division of paediatric haematology-oncology, department of paediatrics, has carried out the first allogeneic stem cell transplantation in an 11 years old child with relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

The university said that it is the 15th stem cell transplant carried out by the division in the last two years and the total cost of the operation has been estimated to be one-fifth of the cost at a corporate hospital.

The transplant procedure was carried out by Vineeta Gupta, Priyanka Aggarwal, and their team of fellows, junior residents, and nursing officers along with the team from Blood Bank under the guidance of Sandip Kumar, S K Singh, and Dinesh Singh. The administrative support was provided by the professor-in-charge Trauma Centre and the head of the Department of Pediatrics according to the university.

According to BHU IMS, the patient had a full match with his elder sister and the institute collected the stem cells from the donor who was the elder sister. The stem cells were then given to the patient. The institute said that the boy was discharged after two months.

As per BHU, the division of paediatric haematology oncology will extend these services to paediatric patients with other blood disorders such as aplastic anaemia, thalassemia, and sickle cell anaemia.

The BHU paediatric haematology oncology facility was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the benefit of the patients of of the people living in 'Purvanchal' according to the university.
