BHU launches postdoctoral fellowship; fellows to get Rs 60,000 monthly

NEW DELHI: Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has launched Raja Jwala Prasad Postdoctoral Fellowship to encourage research at its campus. Under the new scheme, faculty members who ave secured significant external funding for research activities will be able to engage young researchers as postdoctoral fellows with them.

The fellowship has been introduced under the Institution of Eminence (IoE) initiative of the union government. It will be for one year but can be extended for another year based on performance and the availability of funds under loE. The fellow will receive a monthly salary of Rs.60,000 and Rs 10,000 as house rent allowance, in addition to a contingency amount of Rs 50,000 per annum. They will also have access to comprehensive benefits, including health services, library and access to other university resources.

The scheme also aims to promote interdisciplinary collaboration across departments and push ongoing research projects through additional research support. The faculty members, who will be getting Raja Jwala Prasad Post-Doctoral Fellows, will act as mentors and will provide guidance and support to the fellows during their tenure at the university.

The scheme commemorates former Pro Vice-Chancellor (VC) of BHU Raja Jwala Prasad who hailed from Bijnor district in Uttar Pradesh. Jwala, who chief engineer of UP, had designed the layout of the university and was instrumental in laying the foundation of present campus.

BHU VC Sudhir Kumar Jain said, “The Fellowship will significantly scale up research activity at the university by attracting young and talented postdoctoral researchers in large numbers. It will also contribute by preparing these young scholars for a successful academic and research career ahead.”

Coordinator of IoE at BHU Sanjay Kumar said, “The BU recognises the contributions of faculty members in bringing external funding for research activities. This scheme is an endeavor to further support to such faculty members,”
