Bihar government hikes stipend for PG medical, dental students

The Bihar government has increased the monthly stipend of postgraduate (PG) medical and dental students studying in government colleges. According to the official notice of health department of government of Bihar the monthly stipend for first-year PG students has been increased to Rs 92,800, and Rs 1,02,000 and Rs 1,12,200 for second- and third-year students, respectively. Earlier, the students in the first, second, and third years were given stipends of Rs 82,000, Rs 90,200, and Rs 99,220 per month, respectively. The revised rates will come into effect retrospectively from January 1, 2026, the notice added.

Moreover, PG students of each year will be eligible for stipend payment for a maximum of 12 months only. However, in case of unauthorised absence from duty, the stipend will be paid after making a proportionate deduction from the monthly amount.

While announcing the decision, Bihar's health minister Nishant Kumar said that increasing stipends is crucial for providing financial support to PG students during their training and service period.

"PG students are future specialist doctors and have an important role in the state's healthcare system. The increase in stipend would encourage them and help create a better environment for medical education," the Bihar health minister said.

New MBBS medical college

Recently, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved the establishment of two new medical colleges, Government Medical College, Chhapra (Saran), and Shri Ram Janki Medical College and Hospital, Samastipur, in Bihar. NMC has approved permission for 50 seats at each institution for the academic year 2026-27.
