Bihar MP seeks central funding to transform BIT Sindri into IIT, IIM; Writes letter to Dharmendra Pradhan

NEW DELHI: Bihar MP Raja Ram Singh has requested central funding to transform BIT Sindri, located in Dhanbad, Jharkhand, into a ‘centrally funded autonomous institution’. Singh has written a letter to Dharmendra Pradhan, the union minister for education, urging for government's support in transforming BIT Sindri into IIT or IIM in Jharkhand.

Singh highlighted the need for more publicly funded educational institutions in Jharkhand to provide affordable, accessible, and quality education for the state's youth. The letter urges for the central government's intervention to improve the education sector and support the development of the state.

Promises made during 2024 Lok Sabha elections

Singh also referred to the promises made by prime minister Narendra Modi during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where he assured the establishment of more IITs, IIMs, and centrally funded universities in Jharkhand. Singh urged the government to fulfill these promises to help uplift the state’s educational landscape and provide more opportunities for its youth.

Singh wrote, “I wish to bring to your notice the promises made by PM Narendra Modi during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, assuring the establishment of more IITS, IIMs, and centrally funded universities in Jharkhand. It is crucial that the government fulfils these promises.”

Demand for regional representation in admissions

Singh addressed the demand for regional representation in BIT Sindri’s admission process. He proposed reserving 50% of seats for Jharkhand domicile students, with the remaining 50% open to all-India candidates. “The central government should also honour the commitments made to the people of Jharkhand during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections concerning the education sector,” said Singh.

BIT Sindri was established in 1949. As per Singh, BIT Sindri has produced nearly 34,000 qualified engineers who have made notable contributions in various industries. Despite being an affiliated institution under the state government, BIT Sindri has faced limitations due to insufficient resources, claims Singh.

Singh has requested for the transformation of BIT Sindri into a centrally funded autonomous body to enhance its infrastructure and academic offerings.
