CAT 2023: Result, scaled score and normalisation process

As the CAT 2023 exam was held in multiple sessions on the exam day, the IIM is likely to follow the normalisation process to arrive at the CAT results.

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Lucknow released the official CAT 2023 answer key for all slots. Candidates can raise objections against the CAT answer key 2023 by December 8. The CAT 2023 exam was held in three sessions on November 26, IIM Lucknow will follow a CAT score normalisation process to ensure that all the candidates are fairly assessed.

The IIM CAT normalisation process adjusts for differences in the difficulty level of the paper in different slots and the scale of score distributions in different patterns. After normalisation in different formats, the scores are further normalised in different sections. The CAT scaled score obtained through this process is then converted into percentiles for shortlisting.

How does the CAT normalisation process work?

Let's see an example of how the scaled score is calculated for CAT 2023 and the normalisation formula;

  • Step 1: First the mean and standard deviation (SD) will be calculated of the raw scores in the VARC section for all candidates who appear in slot 1.

    • Let Mean = M1 and SD = S1, and G1 = M1 + S1.

  • Step 2: Calculate the mean and standard deviation (SD) of the raw scores in the VARC section for all candidates who appear in slot 2.

    • Let Mean = M2 and SD = S2, and G2 = M2 + S2.

  • Step 3: Calculate the mean and standard deviation (SD) of the raw scores in the VARC section for all candidates who appear in slot 3.

    • Let Mean = M3 and SD = S3, and G3 = M3 + S3.

  • Step 4: Calculate the mean and the standard deviation (SD) of the raw scores in the VARC section for all candidates appearing in the CAT 2023. Let Mean = M and SD = S, and G = M + S.

In case XYZ is a candidate who appeared in the morning session and his/her raw score in the VARC section is R. Then the scaled score of XYZ in VARC, says ^R given by;

A similar methodology is applied for the computation of scaled scores for other sections. If this formula yields any scaled score of more than 100, it will be rounded down to 100.

While declaring the CAT 2023 result, the scaled scores for each section (VARC, DILR, and QA) and the total along with the percentiles will be published.

To calculate the CAT percentile, candidates can use the following formula;

  • ? = [(? − ?)/ N] x 100

Where;

P = Percentile score

N = Total number of candidates who appeared for CAT 2023

r = Assign a rank

Candidates can also use the CAT percentile predictor tool to easily calculate their percentile. Raw CAT 2023 score calculated based on the IIM CAT response sheet can be added to the percentile predictor tool to know the CAT percentile. IIM Lucknow will be announcing the CAT result 2023 in the second week of January 2024. CAT 2023 score will be accepted by 500+ colleges in the country for MBA/ PGP admission.
