CBSE Class 12 answer scripts to be checked via on-screen marking from 2026: Board

In a major shift in the board’s assessment process, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced on-screen marking (OSM) for the evaluation of CBSE Class 12 board exams from the academic year 2026.

While CBSE Class 12 answer books will be evaluated digitally, Class 10 answer sheets will be checked in physical mode, the board clarified.

CBSE conducts Class 10, 12 board exams annually in India and across 26 countries, covering nearly 46 lakh students. The move to introduce on-screen marking was aimed at improving efficiency, transparency, and speed in the evaluation process.

As per the CBSE Class 10, 12 date sheet 2026, the board exams will begin on February 17 and Class 10 exams will conclude on March 11 and Class 12 on April 10.

Benefits of on-screen marking

In a circular issued on February 9, the CBSE Board said the on-screen marking system is expected to eliminate common errors and delays associated with manual evaluation.

Listing 10 benefits of adopting OSM method, CBSE said it will remove totalling errors, reduce manual coordination, and allow faster evaluation with wider participation of teachers without requiring them to travel to the centres.

“Teachers can remain in their schools and continue regular duties,” the board said, adding that it will also cut down transportation costs and time. It further noted that post-result verification of marks will no longer be required, reducing manpower requirement for verification.

The board said OSM method is an opportunity for all affiliated schools, including those abroad, to participate in the evaluation process, and described it as an "environmentally sustainable digital evaluation".

The board has also announced plans to conduct multiple dry runs, organise training programmes, release instructional videos, and set up a call centre to address technical issues.

How should CBSE schools prepare?

For a smooth implementation of on-screen marking, CBSE has directed schools to ensure the availability of basic digital infrastructure, including;

• A computer lab with a public static IP
• PCs or laptops with Windows OS 8 or above, at least 4 GB RAM, and 1GB free space.
• Updated internet browser (Chrome/ Edge/ E/ Firefox).
• Adobe Reader
• Reliable internet connectivity (minimum 2 Mbps).
• Uninterrupted power supply.

These requirements are already part of CBSE’s affiliation by-laws. CBSE said it will allow teachers with OASIS IDs to login and familiarise themselves with advance.
