NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) chairman Iqbal Singh Lalpura has urged the education ministry to issue guidelines permitting Sikh candidates appearing for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) 2025 to wear their religious articles of faith, including the Kara and Kirpan, during the examination. The JEE Main 2025 session 2 exam is scheduled to be held from April 1 to 8, 2025. JEE Main Result 2025 Live

NCM emphasised that Sikh candidates should be allowed to follow their religious practices without facing any barriers during competitive exams.

Citing Article 25 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the right to freely profess, practice, and propagate religion, the commission pointed out that wearing the Kirpan is a fundamental right of the Sikh community.

JEE Main 2025: Dress code relaxation for Sikhs

The Commission further highlighted the Delhi High Court's order in 2022, which had ruled in favor of Sikh candidates appearing for exams organized by the Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB). In the judgment, the Delhi High Court permitted Sikh candidates to wear both the Kara and Kirpan during exams.

The NCM’s letter urged the ministry to implement similar provisions for JEE Mains 2025, ensuring that Sikh candidates can take the exam without any hindrances to their religious rights, while also adhering to necessary security protocols.

"The ministry is requested to issue guidelines for Sikh candidates appearing for JEE Mains 2025, allowing them to wear their religious articles of faith during the exams while ensuring compliance with the necessary procedures", NCM official notice read.
