CLAT 2018: NUALS announces seat allotment sans institute-wise details

NEW DELHI, MAY 11: While the National University of Advanced Legal Studies Kochi (NUALS) announced seat allotment to different National Law Universities basis the merit of students in Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), the procedural flaws surfaced yet again with officials not publishing the complete seat allotment. This is in contrast with the last year’s counselling process where complete seat allotment list across different NLUs was announced along with the announcement of seat allotment details to individual candidates through their official CLAT log-in ID.

The officials did not announce the complete seat allotment list despite a delay of three days in the announcement of the first round of seat allotment. The announcement was delayed by 3 days with the final allotment for the first round made only on June 10.

Earlier, the CLAT first indicative seat allotment list and counselling was to be announced on June 7. The seat allotment list of CLAT 2018 for postgraduate programmes was announced on June 8 but the same for undergraduate programmes came no sooner than late-night on June 10. Still, unlike last year, the CLAT Committee has not provided the list of candidates who have been allotted seats in different National Law Universities (NLUs).

The effect of delay

With the postpone of seat allotment list, the date for exercising seat options including locking of choices, shifting of seats and seat withdrawal option besides paying the counselling fee can now be done between June 10 and June 14, 2018.

Till last year, the CLAT Committee would publish the NLU-wise list of seat allotment.

While NUALS Kochi officials admitted that the complete list has not been published along with the announcement of seat allotment, they said that the CLAT implementation committee is looking into the possibility of publishing the complete institute-wise allotment.

“We are following the CLAT counselling and seat allotment process according to the exam events calendar. Further, the list of candidates allotted seats in respective NLUs will also be published but later on,” CLAT officials told Careers360.

CLAT 2018 Highlights

This year CLAT Committee headed by NUALS Kochi has also reduced admission rounds to three only from yesteryear’s four. 

Also, following an SC order on a complaint from CLAT takers regarding testing glitches, NUALS Kochi has compensated selected candidates with bonus marks. The Supreme Court, earlier, had ordered NUALS Kochi to constitute a Grievance Committee which would look after the individual complaints of CLAT 2018 takers on account of the glitches in Common Law Admission Test administered on May 13 across India.

The national level law entrance exam –CLAT, is conducted annually for admissions to around 2300 seats on offer across 19 NLUs.
