NEW DELHI: The Government of Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday announced that all educational institutions in the state would be shut with “immediate effect” in the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic, caused by the novel coronavirus.

With this announcement, all educational institutions in the country are effectively shut as Andhra Pradesh was the last state to make this announcement.

The announcement was made by PV Ramesh, the additional chief secretary to Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, through his social media account.

Ramesh said: “To strengthen ongoing measures to prevent and contain COVID-19 in Andhra Pradesh, government has decided to close all educational institutions with immediate effect. Strong advice to every person to act responsibly and contribute to mitigation of the pandemic.”

So far, the state has one positive case of COVID-19 as a student who returned from Italy tested positive on March 12.

As of Wednesday, India has 134 active cases of COVID-19 not including the ones who have already been cured.
